Tennis Open: Counting the millions too
As the Aussie Open gets underway in Melbourne today, the dollars the two-week event generate are truly eye-watering.
According to the Australian Financial Review's John Stensholt, the Open now generates $A86m in sponsorship revenue and $A118m in broadcasting income each year.
Tennis Australia reported revenue of $A320m in 2017, and it is on track to lift this to $A500m in coming years, the newspaper says.
Among associated activities are reported to be a food festival, concerts and a children's theme park in partnership with the Walt Disney Company.
